Aaron’s present

View Comments

We bought Aaron a present for behaving so well in his latest allergist appointment and generally being a good kid through that entire day. We bought him some convertible in-line skates. There are 3 wheels, one in front and two, side-by-side, in the back. When he is ready, we can move the side-by-side wheels, like regular in-line skates.

Since he had his skates, he wanted either me or Meri to skate with him. I put on my skates and realized it’s been way too long since I’ve done that! It was a lot of fun. It was like riding a bike, I was flying down the alleyway turning and stopping like I used to. In college, I used to skate with a roommate through the parking garage. We used to start at the top of the garage, which was normally empty and fly down the ramps to the subsequent levels, sometimes almost getting hit (or running into) cars. It was a lot of fun. After college, I would go to a bike/skate park the city of Jacksonville set up. They paved over 15 or 16 miles worth of unused railroad tracks and opened it up to the public. I used to go there with my mom maybe once a month or once every other month. It’s been a few years since I used my skates and I will be using them more and more now.

Aaron did really well in his skates. He did a lot better once Meri and I let go of him and let him figure it out on his own. It was a good present I think. He will really enjoy them.

Aaron had a long over-due appointment with an allergist today. He hasn’t had an allergy test in almost 2 years (thanks to changing jobs a few times and health insurance lapses). He got the dreaded multi-stick test. Aaron started wheezing in his sleep a few weeks ago and that got the fire under our asses to finally make an appointment. We were concerned that he was developing asthma since we were told by his allergist in Memphis.

We tested him for the stuff we knew he was allergic to (milk, eggs and mold) and some common environmental allergens. He tested negative for EVERYTHING! The control stick came out as the allergist expected but none of the other sticks came back as positive, meaning he’s not allergic to anything!

This was my first experience with the multi-stick allergy test. If you don’t know what that is, imagine someone writing on your back, swabbing you down with alcohol and then sticking you with 44 needles! Aaron started crying around the fifth stick and then started screaming around the eighth to the last one. It was probably one of the worst experiences I’ve had to witness my son going through. I don’t want to do that again. It’s too hard to hold and listen to your child screaming like that.

So now we are going to follow-up with a doctor in the same office; we saw a nurse practitioner at todays appointment. His allergy medicine was also changed. Instead of taking Singulair he will be doing nebulizer treatments twice a day.

After his appointment, all three and a half of us went to a “sibling class” at the hospital where Eli will be born. The class was geared towards kids; the presenter was speaking in a highly annoying tone that kept most of the kids attention. We took a tour of the birthing floor of the hospital. Aaron got to put a diaper on a baby (and on his stuff gorilla) and also learned how to hold a baby. My only complaint was that it was too long.

After that, we went to PR’s Taco Palace. One of the most disgusting restaurants you will ever (willingly) step foot in but dammit they have good Mexican food.
